Random thoughts of a fiber enthusiast - mostly fiber related, sometimes coherent

Dreams

I dreamed of peacocks and triangular shawls last night. Must be the effect of the MS3. The gap between the time I finished Clue 1 and when Clue 2 is posted seemed interminable. I need something else to do. Sweaters are too hot to have on my lap during the heat wave we are experiencing. Socks aren’t grabbing my attention. MS3 has my lace juices going again. I need more!

That must be why I was dreaming of lace. But peacocks? I have no idea, except that I was looking at a fir cone pattern the other day and thought that it might look like the eye on the peacock feathers. Would you believe that I even dreamed of the chart? I think I can draft out what I dreamed last night in about an hour with Barbara Walker and some graph paper.

This morning, I took a look at the web. Lo and behold! Fiddlestick Knitting already has a Peacock Feathers Shawl. It is very different from what I envisions, but gorgeous, nonetheless. It will definitely go on my project to do list. I have some variations that I want to make, but wow. That pattern makes me salivate.

Back to my dream pattern. I went back to Google Images and searched for peacocks. I realized that what I had envisioned didn’t really look like a peacock in full display. What I was dreaming was more like if you take individual feathers and placed them next to each other like a wing. It’ll still be interesting, but I like Fiddlestick’s better.

Does that mean I’ll abandon mine? No. I still want to play with it. Will it work out? I don’t know. We’ll see.

Mystery Stole 3

I don’t normally join the *-alongs, just because. But as I am facing a long summer of health related stuff, I was looking around for something lacy, challenging, and will occupy me over the course of the convalescence. The Mystery Stole 3, hosted by Melanie seems like a really good idea.

As I read her list of supplies, I dug into my stash. Yup. I have everything I needed without going any further than my garage. Zephyr? Check (actually enough Zephyr in my stash to choke a horse). Beads of the appropriate size and matches the Zephyr yarn I chose? Check. Crochet Hook? Check. Knitting Needles? Check.

Actually, that’s kinda scary. The number of choices I actually had without breaking a sweat, in 80+F and no air conditioning, is astounding.

I will need another project to occupy the spare time between the clues, if any. I finished spinning 1800 yds of sport weight superwash to make a baby blanket/shawl for a baby that is due in September. I just need to finish the yarn before I can cast on. I ‘m not letting the fact that I still haven’t decided on the pattern stop me. <grin>

Life & Spinning

I’ve been exhausted for the past several months. I thought it was burn out from work coupled with lots of traveling and lack of sleep. It turned out that I’ve been severely anemic for the past several months. It’s amazing what a few units of blood will do for your body.

Needless to say, I haven’t felt much like all the activities of blogging: taking pictures, cropping, formatting them for the web, and posting. I’m still taking things easy for the time being.

Hopefully, that will all turn around soon. In the meantime, I’m playing it safe and cancelled my excursion up to Eugene for the Black Sheep Gathering. I’ve given up my class slots and cancelled my flight. What am I going to miss the most? Hanging out with my friends.

I’ve been spinning quite a bit though. I finished the fractals spinning, but I haven’t finished the yarn. (There are 2 spendid articles on both of these techniques in the current issue of SpinOff!)

I also finished a Swallowtail Shawl (Fall 2005 Interweave Knits) in a hand-painted baby alpaca/silk yarn from The Artful Ewe. That was a joy to knit. The fiber and colors were a joy to work with. The pattern was simple for kept my interest. I can understand why everyone in blogland seem to not able to stop at one. I have to admit that immediately upon completion, I wanted to look for more stash yarn for another. It’s a fast knit. I finished mine in under a week of sporadic knitting.

Finishing the spun yarn and blocking the shawl both takes energy that I haven’t had. Hopefully, I’ll get to them some time in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, I’m busily spinning up some Crown Mountain Farms superwash wool for a baby blanket. The baby is due in September.
