Random thoughts of a fiber enthusiast - mostly fiber related, sometimes coherent

Serendipity

I was looking through my web stats (*) this morning and saw that someone had been viewing my Baby Blanket post from several years ago. This was made for a girl friend’s first baby. She just had her third last fall and very recently made the decision to take a respite from work and stay at home with the three little ones. (Tomorrow is her exit interview. Congratulations!)

Summer is upon us. Summer means lazy outdoor meals, including meals in the marina with my friends. And after the sun goes down, we scramble for blankets and wraps. These “baby” blankets will be fabulous as a shoulder wrap. Even better, all that mindless knitting is perfect for social knitting.  I think I may have have some yarn around here that might work. snerk.

* The reason I was looking through the stats wasn’t due to vanity, but security. Last week, I installed a Word Press plug-in that limits failed login attempts. It’s completely configurable, but I have it set to 4 failed attempts before it locks that IP out from further logins for 20 minutes. I can not believe how many people / robots / what-have-you have attempted to log into my WP installation as “Admin”, which is the default administrator account. I have since (a) created a strong password for all of my WP accounts, and (b) changed my default administrator account to another account name. All this is in addition to the plug-in.

It’s scary out there! How about you? What are you doing to protect your blog?

Square Hats

Square Alpaca Hats

Have you heard? Black Sheep Handweavers Guild will be taking donations of handmade items for the Shelter Network during our annual Holiday Potluck on December 15th.

I thought that I would whip out a few quick and easy hats to add to the donation pile. I found a collection of odd balls of handpainted alpaca and this fun and easy hat pattern — Round Head in a Square Hat. It’s a fun pattern all knit on 16″ circular needles with quick grafting job to close the top and Voila! A hat. And the alpaca is very soft and squishy.

My yarn is a light worsted weight so I had to adapt the pattern to match my gauge to the rough final dimensions of the original hats.

The blue hat is baby sized, and the pink one is somewhere between child and adult sized. I have a lot more of the alpaca to make up several more hats.

So…what are you making for the donation box?

On Edge

I lieu of starting something new, I’ve decided to go ahead and start on the edging for the Circle of Life shawl. It’s progressing nicely. I’ve just finished the 1st of the 8 sections. Skipping directly to the dark brown is definitely the right decision. There is nice contrast. No pictures until the edging is done.

What I’m finding interesting is that while Ellie has shown absolutely no interest in my fibers in the past, she seems to think that the shawl is the cat’s meow. She loves jumping on my lap and knead the heck out of the shawl before taking a nap on it. While I would like to think that it’s me that she’s showing some love for, but unfortunately, it appears that the shawl is the draw. Ah well.
